Depth of cover to reinforcement

Depth of cover to reinforcement of concrete is important to corrosion prevention as it will extend the time taken for atmospheric carbon dioxide and/or chloride ions to reach embedded reinforcement which, should this occur, will reduce the protective alkalinity of surrounding concrete or directly propagate corrosion respectively.

The depth of cover to reinforcement is measured using an electromagnetic covermeter which directly measures the depth to embedded reinforcement.  Where acceptable, the covermeter is calibrated prior to use by direct measurement to physically exposed reinforcement.

The minimum depth of cover to reinforcement at a test location is identified and recorded to the nearest 1mm.

In reporting the results are presented in tabular form and can also be shown as a colour contour plot of cover values over a specific test area.

Testing is undertaken in accordance with BS1881: Part 204:1988 and is covered by our *UKAS accreditation.
