Leicester Mercury Sports Awards part 2

January 12th, Leicester City football legend Alan Birchenall collapsed on stage at the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards. He was dead for 7 minutes before he was resuscitated by three health professionals attending the event.

The event was cancelled and then rescheduled for yesterday evening and kindly hosted by Lumbers Jewellery.  Dr Nicky Hickman, who was attending the initial event with her husband Ian who was representing our sponsorship of the awards, received flowers and champagne from Mr Birchenall as a token of his gratitude to the three people who saved his life.

It was warming to see such a good turn out for the rescheduled event and obviously meant a lot to Alan. We were privileged to have been able to attend the evening and were very grateful for the following kind words after the event.

“I just wanted to personally thank you for attending last night and supporting LMSA part 2. We really appreciate you giving up your time to be there and I know it meant a lot to Alan to have everyone there. Thank you very much for your support throughout the entire campaign” – John Hayes CEO, Champions UK PLC

Attention then turned to the award winners, Leicester City Football Club taking the highest honours with a special recognition award for their achievements in winning the Premier League last season.

Mark Selby won a lifetime achievement award and the sportsman of the year title for his performance in Snooker.

The sportswoman of the year award went to swimmer Harriet Cooper for winning a bronze medal at the British championships and qualifying for competitions on the world stage.

Leicester Riders were awarded team of the year along with some other awards.

Rob Paternostro received coach of the year and Kevin Routledge won the Neville Hamilton Award.

All in all it was a brilliant night for a lot of reasons and we hope that next year can continue to build on the fantastic sense of community that this awards ceremony highlighted within Leicester.
