 History

Nichols Colton Group has been in business for 54 years. We started out in cramped premises near our current central Leicester office location, in 1965, when John Colton and Roy Nicholls decided to offer engineering testing and consultancy services to the construction sector.

The business grew rapidly, and within only a few years it moved into the current Head Office location at Harding Street. Staff numbers increased, and the scope of services continued to expand, reflecting the constantly changing needs of our clients and the increasing complexity of construction projects nationwide.

In 2005, Ian Elliot and Alex Warwick, both of whom had worked in the business for over twenty years, took over the ownership of the company following the retirement of the previous Directors, Keith Spencer and Brian Pailing. Under their leadership, the business continued to expand, most notably in 2008 when they opened the environmental testing laboratory.

In 2015, the Group had expanded to such extent that new premises were purchased, on Ratby Lane in Leicester Forest East. The Geotechnical and Structures & Pavements teams were moved into the new premises, and the laboratories were then able to expand into the newly vacated offices at Harding Street.

In recent years, the Group has added Environmental Monitoring (dust, noise and vibration, for example) to its portfolio, and has continually widened its testing offering, including for example asbestos analysis. Most recently, surveying and drainage investigations and consultancy have been added to our scope of services.

54 years ago, our founders John Colton and Roy Nicholls began to provide bespoke testing and consultancy services to the construction industry. Today, the Nicholls Colton Group is very proud to have continued and greatly expanded upon their vision.

Who knows what the future will bring?

Whatever it is, we guarantee we will not be standing still.
