It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr John Colton,

one of the two founding Partners of the Nicholls Colton Group.

John Colton, together with Roy Nicholls, formed Nicholls Colton & Partners in 1965. They grew the business from a small civil engineering consultancy in cramped quarters, to a well-respected and thriving multi-disciplinary practise, offering an ever increasing range of laboratory and site testing services, and a geotechnical consultancy. John was an especially shrewd businessman.

Alex Warwick, current Chairman of Nicholls Colton Group said “John Colton interviewed me for the role of Junior Geotechnical Engineer, when I arrived fresh out of Polytechnic in 1987. He was good enough to employ me, for which I clearly owe him a huge debt of gratitude. I remember him with great fondness – he always kept an eye on how I was progressing. It is a tremendous loss to hear of his passing.”

Having only recently celebrated 50 Years in Business, this sad news is all the more poignant for all of us still here at Nicholls Colton Group. There are of course still a dozen or so staff here today, who recall working for Mr Colton.

Mr Colton passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after a short illness. He was 90 years old.
